Does this seem like a strange thing to do?

You can't force someone to be supportive of your choices. Talking to them about it might help, just tell them that it hurts how doubtful they are about it. But if you don't want to do that, just prove them wrong. Become the best teacher you possibly can. Show a side of yourself that has apparently been hidden. It's YOUR life, not theirs.
