Native Americans and the Birth of America?

I read an article in my history class and basically they were calling Native Americans "key-stone species" so my question is, What does crediting Native Americans as "key-stone species" have implications for the way contemporary society manages the waterlands, forests, and endangered speices? I really want to know what the article means by key-stone speices! HElP ME PLEASE
